Growing Acceptance: Las Vegas’ Outlook on Cannabis Industry

April 20, 2025

In Las Vegas, the neon lights illuminate more than just the casinos—they also shine on a rapidly developing cannabis industry. As the beverage and hospitality capital thrives on innovation, so too does its cannabis scene. And while the public’s perception is evolving, a complex mix of enthusiasm, skepticism, and cautious optimism continues to shape how locals and visitors view the industry.

According to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Cannabis Policy Institute, nearly 70% of Nevada adults support having designated cannabis lounges or consumption areas inside casino-resorts, with about 40% stating they’d be more likely to visit such venues if cannabis were permitted. Clearly, the concept of integrating marijuana into the hospitality experience resonates well—especially in a city all about novel guest experiences.

Yet, despite this public backing, the rollout of cannabis lounges has been rocky. Only two state-regulated venues opened over four years—Smoke and Mirrors, which shuttered after just one year, and Planet 13’s Dazed Lounge, now the sole remaining public lounge. Many observers point to high regulatory costs and restrictive rules—like bans on alcohol sales—as barriers to success. One expert noted that Smoke and Mirrors “struggled financially” and is now limited to private events only. This highlights how the public may favor cannabis in theory, but real-world execution remains challenging.

Another key factor shaping perception is the competition with the illicit market. The Cannabis Compliance Board’s TPMA-commissioned report reveals that legal dispensaries’ revenues in Nevada now hover around $829 million—down from earlier years—while the black market still accounts for a full quarter to a third of the state’s cannabis consumption value, especially near the Strip. Residents see this disparity: legal shops carry high overhead and tax costs, while street sellers benefit from convenience and proximity, especially given restrictions like the 1,500‑foot buffer from gaming venues for legal shops.

Still, public opinion leans positive for legal cannabis overall. Confidence is growing as prices drop—the average Nevada price for an eighth has moved from around $40 toward national levels—driven by the push to compete with illegal sources. Many locals appreciate the regulated, safer alternative, even though tourists might still turn to informal channels for quick, accessible purchases.

The rise of premier players like Planet 13—a massive, Strip‑adjacent “superstore” and entertainment complex—boosts the public’s sense that legal cannabis is becoming part of tourism culture. Locals see this flagship destination as a beacon for market legitimacy, while critics point to indoor‑grown costs pushing prices above those in other states.

Still, public concern around health and regulation is prudent. In March 2025, the American Cancer Society lobbied against expanding indoor consumption lounges due to secondhand smoke risks and weakening of the Clean Indoor Air Act. These voices reflect a cautious, informed public—not resistant, but invested in responsible development.

In essence, Las Vegas views cannabis distribution with hopeful anticipation. The public embraces the potential of safe, legal access and integrated hospitality, but demands careful rollout and regulations that protect consumers, workers, and public health. As legal prices continue to slide and dispensaries enhance service models—from online ordering to diversified product lines—Las Vegas looks ready to shape a cannabis culture that complements its legendary entertainment scene.
